Making Healthy Food Choices When You Are Busy

By James Warrington

Everyone knows we have to be making healthy food choices for ourselves and our family members, but this is not usually easy when we're just too busy. The good thing is no matter how busy you might be, you could do better than eating fast food on your meals. Making healthy food choices can be difficult but when you do a little research and prepare, you can do it.

The following are tips to help you start making healthy food picks:

1 . Don't tempt yourself. We often enter the supermarket intent on only purchasing healthy foods, but when we see all of the unhealthy foods, all of us end up giving in either because we aren't strong or out of habit.

* Do not shop hungry! If you're hungry, you're going to go with what looks good not what is healthy.

* Clean out your own cabinets and fridge of unhealthy foods. If you do not have them, you can't eat them.

* Try to find a healthy substitute for the foods your loved ones loves. Instead of chips, give your family trail mix or a rice cake. There are plenty of yogurts and puddings that have very few calories available on the market.

2 . Try to make healthy and quick meals at home. When you have a long day at work and you have a hungry family at home, it's tempting to go through a quick food drive through for supper. You could make healthy, fast food and it is easier and less expensive than you think.

* You will be surprised at the variety of quick but healthy foods you can prepare at home. You must plan ahead, but you will have a delicious and filling meal that is healthy and that costs less than eating at restaurants.

* Do a little research on the internet to locate quick and simple recipes with healthy ingredients. You will find lots of recipes that contain just 5 or less ingredients and can be made in a 30 minutes. Keep the recipes that the family loves so you can make them again.

3. Cook enough for several meals at a time and save the leftovers. This allows you to pull a meal from the freezer, heat it up, and serve your loved ones a nutritious meal. This is great for individuals who are busy!

4. Do not eat so fast! Your stomach does not inform your brain it is full for about twenty minutes. Eating rapidly means eating more than you need. If you still feel hungry, you're probably going to eat unhealthy foods. Try to eat slower and you'll know you are full sooner than you think.

* Calm down and relax before you start to eat. Do not watch tv or try to get your children on their way to an activity. Sit in a calm manner with your family so the meal is satisfying for everybody.

5. Spend dinner time socializing. While eating with your family, you need to focus on the good food and the good company.

If you treat dinner time like a time for you to socialize, you'll find it's simpler to make healthy food choices. You won't be focused on getting the meal over with that could result in eating too much later.

* When you and your family are making healthy food picks, you can really enjoy your dinner. Spend time together and have some good conversations. If you talk while you eat, you're going to eat slower and also reconnect with loved ones.

The following tips listed above can help you begin making healthy food picks for you and your family. It's easier than you think to make healthy food choices no matter how busy you're when you remember how important a family dinner is and plan ahead.
